Call 2023
eXploЯA is a cultural project aimed at promoting transversal meeting opportunities. The main goal is to investigate the knowledge of cultural heritage, through the multiple declinations connected to the field of drawing. Paying homage to the work of Vito Cardone, a journey between the virtual and the ‘real’ is proposed, an exploration that can directly involve researchers working in the Drawing area – opening up in an interdisciplinary perspective to contributions from related sectors – and a wider audience of users.
The call is an invitation to share surveys, models, and experiences related to the theme, produced during travel, research and exploration. In particular, among the objectives, is that of is to make usable, through the tools that constitute the state of the art of the discipline (explorable digital models and surveys, AR/VR, rapid prototyping, etc.) architectures that have never been built, destroyed, or are inaccessible. Such architectures can find other lives through the sharing of digital reconstructions, explorable surveys, models. On the methodological level, reference is made to those tools capable of making accessible, in the most general sense of the term, documents that are often presented in a non-interactive manner, going to compose, with reference to the source data, a real ‘digital cemetery’.
The project refers to the field of extended reality (XR), a term used to indicate the relationships and interactions between virtual and real environments. This definition helps to overcome thedichotomy between analogical representation methodologies and digital techniques. The experiences of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), constitute fields of investigation for which the debate appears to be of great relevance, with implications of a practical, theoretical, cultural nature, and for different ethical aspects.
Confronting the continuous change in the perception of reality, in the transition from real to virtual, and from virtual to real, the construction of the digital model paves the way for the production of elaborations capable of expressing, with different outcomes, the potential of integrated graphic expression tools.
Session overview
From this point of view, participants are asked to send contributions related to one of the three proposed thematic sessions:
drawing
modelling
exploring
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Digital reconstructions and visualizations of unbuilt, destroyed or inaccessible architectural projects;
Innovative applications of extended reality (XR) technologies for the enhancement and dissemination of cultural heritage;
Multidisciplinary approaches to the context of extended reality (XR) and cultural heritage documentation;
Reflections of an ethical nature and technical challenges in the field of extended reality (XR) for heritage representation;
User experience and interaction design in cultural heritage experiences in the context of extended reality (XR);
Methodologies and collaborative tools for the creation of immersive environments for heritage;
Case studies and best practices in the use of extended reality (XR) for architectural heritage research and education.
Abstract Submission
In a first phase, it is required to submit an abstract in Italian or English, which will be uploaded through the www.explorauid.com portal (abstract submission section).
At the same time as completing the appropriate form, a single .doc or .docx file called author_abstract.doc (or .docx) will be uploaded.
The file must contain:
title;
author;
author affiliation;
email contacts;
short biographical note of the author: max 100 words;
indication of the chosen thematic session;
abstract text: min 1500, max 2000 characters, for mainly graphic contributions;
min 4000, max 5000 characters for contributions with a prevalent theoretical characterization;
images: min 1, max 3;
keywords: max 5;
bibliographic references: max 5.
Final Submission
The final contributions will be drafted according to the following specifications:
Contributions of a mainly graphic nature:
Text (max. 15,000 characters excluding abstract, bibliography and notes + 6 images including 1 cover image) to be drafted according to the editorial standards for texts.
Free choice of session between: Drawing, Modelling, Exploring.
Contributions with mainly theoretical aspects:
Text (max. 30,000 characters excluding abstract, bibliography and notes + 11 images including 1 cover image) to be written according to the editorial standards for texts.
Free choice of session between: Drawing, Modelling, Exploring.
Optional possibility of presenting, during the day in presence, in relation to the chosen theme, respectively: poster, physical model, virtual model, according to the indications valid for contributions of a predominantly graphic nature.
Session overview:
Drawing Session: presentation of a poster measuring 35 x 70 cm to be freely paginated according to the template available in PSD and TIFF formats with layers. The poster will be printed by the organisation.
Modelling session: presentation of a physical 3D model to be sent in STL format (already optimised for printing). The printing of the model will be carried out by and at the expense of the organisation according to the dimensions and methods agreed with the authors. It may also be agreed with the organisation to provide a physical model printed directly by the authors.
Exploring Session: submission of a virtual 3D model to be sent in OBJ or PLY format with a maximum size of 50 megabytes. The models will be uploaded into an online repository by the organisation.
For the drafting of the final contributions, reference will be made to the standards and templates made available in the Call2023 section of the www.explorauid.com portal.
Publication
All final contributions, selected through a double-blind peer review process, will be published in volume with ISBN (publisher PUBLICA) and international scientific committee. The volume will be made available in the form of an ebook, in open access, on the publishing platform PUBLICA Sharing Knowledge.
International study day, exhibition and sharing of results
The authors of the selected contributions will participate in the international study day that will take place in the aula magna in Piazza Borghese of the Sapienza University of Rome in March 2024. A selection of graphic contributions will be presented in an exhibition space set up during the study day.
